turned cat litter box into nest box

Great idea! Can't help worrying about your cat, though... is it still holding it in?

Our nests were not ideally placed because they ended up using them to sleep in, so they get very soiled. I ended up taking the doors off some stackable feed storage containers that were just sitting there, and filled them with woodshavings - they seem very popular, that's consistently where I find eggs now.

I very quickly switched from hay to woodshavings because of the moisture resistance. We live in a wetlands area and it was a big consideration to have something that didn't smell or retained moisture.

I do love the idea of a wicker laundry basket... sounds incredibly charming and rustic!

I've always used hay without any problems whatsoever. Hay is plentiful around this farm. Clean it out once a week. I think it's adorable to watch the hens make a comfy little nest in the center of the hay. I may be overthinking things, but I feel it's important to make the distinction in the hens minds. Hay is for laying eggs on, pine shavings (like on the floor of the coop) is not.

I use hay, too. I tried shavings in some of the boxes, but the hens quit using them until I switched back to hay.
