Turning a horse shelter into a coop...any ideas?

What an awesome opportunity to be creative. Definitely use hardware cloth or welded wire, especially on the bottom portion (at least the bottom two feet, preferably more if possible) to keep predators out. Personally, I would tend to locate the laying boxes towards a corner - you could easily make a coop in a corner to keep the birds more protected at night and place the nesting boxes to the outside of the existing structure for ease of collection. This would also give the chickens a place to get out of the wind should you ever have a "cold" snap. You could build the coop so that it utilizes one of the half doors and you have easy access to the inside for ease of cleaning. The only other thing that comes to mind is, since you have plenty of height in this structure, you could use part of a tree (some trunk plus some branches) as a roosting option/adventure area for the chickens. Good luck and please share pictures as you begin to build.

You have a great start.Just a reminder to make sure that you put proper vents in it so that you can keep your chickens healthier. They need a good air flow so they don't over heat. You have a place for coop, inside run and an outside run. Also go around the outside of your fenced in area and come out bout 2ft and place wire flat on the ground so that preditors can't dig down beside your fence and get in.I'd mow it real close and lay the fence down real flat or you can scrape the ground down a few inches and then cover the fence.Keep us posted as you go.It'll be nice

We also have to deal with the Florida heat. I made two big windows on each of the long walls covered in hardware cloth for better air flow. I also opted for using milk crates for nesting boxes for the same reason. I had planned on having external nesting boxes so I could access the eggs without going in the coop, but the more I thought about the heat issue of hens sitting in a covered box during the heat of the day, the more concerned I became with that option.
