Turns out I love them more than I thought!

The very best advice I can give you is to follow Dobie Lover. Dobermans aren't huge like Newfies or protected by their thick coats. You may need to attach bacon strips with aluminum foil to electrified fencing(when it is turned off) so that once turned back on your dogs will encounter a surprise to their muzzle and not forget it.

We talked about doing electrical and are still considering it. Funny they stuck their noses in our beehive once but they haven't done that again...so they can learn those lessons quickly! Poor puppy came in with the puffiest face. Unfortunately chickens don't have the ability to defend themselves that way!

What a horrible way to find out how much you love your chickens. You are among the countless number of us who have cried over remains of what were supposed to be "just chickens," only to find out that they were so much more.

Kudos to the non-chicken vet who helped you out, and best wishes for Ghost and her sister.

I brought the clinic staff cookies and fudge. They really all went above and beyond. The vet had taken a bunch of before and after pictures because she didn't think she'd be able to get Ghost closed up but managed to do it. She was (rightfully) pretty proud of her work. Something to add to the resume I guess!

Welcome! I'm so sorry for your losses, and can relate totally to your miserable experience this week. It's wonderful that your two survivors are doing so well, and that you found someone who could help them right away.
Do build 'Ft. Knox', and electric fencing is a huge help too. @Howard E has good advice about it here, and Premier1supplies.com has good advice and products, including their electrified poultry netting.
My dogs love chicken too, and other predators show up sometimes, and it's difficult.
:hugs

Oh my! That was a tough way to find out your chickens are pets! :hugs Losing so many all at once is heart breaking! And you definitely came to the right place if you're looking for understanding and empathy! We have all lost chickens either to predators or disease and we know just how you feel. They really do waddle their way right into your heart!

I'm glad it brought you to BYC! Welcome!
I've got a friend at work that has chickens that she adores. I texted her from the vet clinic because I knew she wouldn't think I was silly for freaking out about them. She said she'd have done the same thing. Good to know there are others out there that feel the same way!

What exactly did you Google to get here? <<<<<<<<<<<

BYC has an APP!
I googled "chicken forums" and y'all popped right up. I've used fish forums in the past when I've had problems with my aquariums and likewise with gardening...figured there had to be one out there for chickens. Hard part is usually finding a forum that's active...but this one is hopping!!:ya
