Turns out I love them more than I thought!

What a horrible way to find out how much you love your chickens. You are among the countless number of us who have cried over remains of what were supposed to be "just chickens," only to find out that they were so much more.

Kudos to the non-chicken vet who helped you out, and best wishes for Ghost and her sister.

It's amazing how attached you can become to a chicken once you see they do have personalities. Also they are like little children, so in need of our protection, just like the one you had that hid only it's head for protection when of course that didn't help it one bit....silly little bird.
I hug mine occasionally although they hate it. :lau

... nothing made me happier than seeing Ghost, the more badly injured of the two, eating yesterday.
Ghost! What an apropos name for her! back from the brink, for sure! I have a "Spooky" and a "Boo," because they're both a shadowy dark grey and they hatched on Halloween night. Naming chickens can be SO much fun?!

:welcome I am sorry you had that experience. My beagle did okay with the flock until one day he got a wild hair, and I lost two girls.
Do you have an animal first aid kit?
As a nurse, you probably will have an easier time getting everything together. I find that my avian kit comes in handy for the dog and humans too.
Please post photos of your critters when you can. We love pictures!

Oh my! That was a tough way to find out your chickens are pets! :hugs Losing so many all at once is heart breaking! And you definitely came to the right place if you're looking for understanding and empathy! We have all lost chickens either to predators or disease and we know just how you feel. They really do waddle their way right into your heart!

I'm glad it brought you to BYC! Welcome!
