Hello all,

We are completely new to owning chickens. We have our coop designed and waiting to have it built. Looking for ideas on breeds, and how to take care of them. I plan to sell the excess eggs to the public. I'm looking for high producers, and good food to egg conversion rate, also want brown or blue, green, or anything odd. Any help or advice will be greatly appreciated!! Thank you in advance for your advice!

Welcome to BYC!

You will want to start in our learning center here on BYC for lots of good tips on raising and keeping your poultry flock...

As for good layers, here is a nice breeds page that gives a lot of detail on each breed...

Here is another good external page with lots of quick info on the different breeds....

As Drumstick Diva has mentioned, some areas of the country will require a license to sell your eggs. I live in a very remote area of my state and there are no laws for selling my eggs. But do some investigation before you jump into deeply to make sure you stay legal.

Great to have you aboard and enjoy your new adventure!

Hello :frow an Welcome To BYC! TwoCrows gave you some great links to get you started! So far as numbers of eggs / food conversion go the commercial breeds will be your best bet, Commercial White Leghorns for white eggs and the Various Red Sex Links (Golden Comet, ISA Brown, Red Star etc) for brown eggs. Hatchery Easter Eggers (they usually sell them incorrectly as Ameraucana) are probably the best of the colored egg layers number wise.
