Hey all.
I have a 9 week old Silkie with twisted neck. The saddest thing to see, ever! :( Although the past few days, he has begun eat and drink again ... YAY! He has also begun to lift his head and neck more often, for longer periods of time. But when he is scared or alone, he "clams up", or twists back up. Is there anything else I can do?
Thank ya bunches!

Sounds like wry neck. The treatment is vitamin E oil 400iu plus a sliver of selenium once a day until symptoms disappear.
Yes, I meant Wry neck. It is not the stargazing type, but the under-the-belly wry neck, if you know what I mean? :) I will look into that, thanks!!!

Silkies tend to be prone to wry neck (torticoilis.) It is a neurological symptom that may be caused by vitamin deficiency, heredity, head injury, and is seen in some diseases that affect the brain (Mareks, respiratory diseases, and others.) Some chickens will also walk backwards, or run in circles, and topple over.

Thiamine (vitamin B1,) vitamin E, and the mineral selenium (found in egg, tuna, nuts, and seeds,) is used to treat it. If the chicken cannot get enough food and water, it may be necessary to hold it wrapped in a towel, and feed it a mixture of feed made wet with water, plus some egg and the vitamins several times a day. Here is an article explaining some of the symptoms:
