I have had chickens for about 8 years and have never lost any to illness. Three weeks ago one of my 3 year old Easter eggers looked like she had dropped dead in my chicken run. Day prior she was fine pecking and hunting bugs with the best of them. Today I found my one year old silkie had died in the night. No signs of a predator. I keep a small flock (16) and a clean coop.first hen felt heavy so I feel like the was no weight loss. My silkie was pretty small even by breed standards so it seemed hard to tell. No outside signs of infestation or infection. I have not put any pesticides out, but two chickens in three weeks bothers me. It has been a very wet year for us in Kansas but other than that I’m doing nothing different. Ideas or suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

I'm sorry to hear of your loss. I am still learning the art of chicken keeping so I can't offer advice or information. I do have a 2 year old easter egger that has an abdominal mass, but I could tell from her behavior she wasn't feeling her best. Hope to hear what others have to say.

I'm sorry for your loss :hugs

Sadly, without a necropsy/testing usually there is no way to know the cause of death. If you still have the body, refrigerate it and send it to your state lab.

If you feel that you can perform your own informal necropsy, take some photos and we will try to help you with what you see.
