Good morning,
I don't do this daily, but when I have a little more time in the morning, I give each bird's crop and breast a quick once over. Well, today TWO of them had crops that hadn't emptied. They weren't huge... more like small and firm-ish. They had LOTS of free range time yesterday, plus they all ate a ton of seeds (rye grass, millet, flax) since I am trying to reseed the yard now that rain has started and don't have the ability to cover all the seed while it sprouts.
Because of the wet conditions, I left their feed in the coop last night (normally I put their feeders in rodent proof containers overnight) so it's possible they had eaten this morning, except everyone seemed to still be up above the feeding area when I let them out.
QUESTION #1: At this point, should I just wait until tomorrow to see if their crops really aren't emptying? I figure some crop massage might be a good idea, since it shouldn't hurt anything. My inclination is to NOT let them free range today, right? (poor girls, it's been crappy and rainy and now we have a beautiful sunny day, so not sure I can stick to that completely... might have to let them out a little later.)
QUESTION #2: I have read two different camps on the whole oil thing for impacted crop. Would there be any harm in treating the whole flock (I only have nine girls... hens and laying pullets) to a scrambled egg treat saturated in olive oil?

I would do a controlled crop inspection tomorrow morning, insuring no food access after sunset.

Meanwhile, a teaspoon of oil won't hurt, and may strengthen your conclusions from whatever results you discover upon inspecting crops come morning.

I would also urge that you visually inspect the crops by viewing each hen from profile, as well as straight on after the crops fill up later today. Look for any sagging below the chest wall. This could indicate pendulous crop which may prevent the crop from emptying completely overnight.

I'm on a sort of crusade to raise awareness of pendulous crop since years ago I lost a favorite, very sweet hen to the condition not realizing why she kept having problems with sour crop.

Well, I did it. They loved it. I do need to head out to pick up my kid from work and give him some driving lessons in the town where he will take his driver's test, so I'll be out (and offline) for a few hours. I see some urgent threads on here and apologize I can't help with them until later.
Oops. Just realized this did not post.
Thank you,@azygous . Should a chicken develop pendulous crop, is there any cure or only treatment?

Nine empty crops this morning. Phew! Right now they’re enjoying some supervised freerange time on this beautiful sunny California morning. Rain expected tomorrow and again later in the week, so I’m very happy they’re out and about getting lots of sunshine today!
