Two legged chicken stealers

Since you are worried about 2-legged theives...this is the very reaon I keep all of our chicken doors pad-locked. I got razzed about "big racoons" until I explained about land-ladies family/grandkids stealing fron their own family (cabbage plants and calves)and how our chickens weren't safe, either. Never lost a chicken to the theives and it has alot to do with our Australian Shepherd and my 2 known handguns...just sayin'

Well , I hate to break this news to you , it was 3 boys that stole my 6 chicks . oldest was 13 , two others were 8 and 10 and yes , they could and did control 6 chicks . and these were 8 weeks old then this happened .
control 6 chicks

Can you believe the nerve that some people have? It sounds like an older kid to me, maybe teens, that decided they wanted to add to or start their own flock. It would be easy to pull that one off. "Hey mom and dad, look what someone gave to me." Maybe you could put up reward posters stating that someone had come into your coop during the day and stole four, 4 wk. old Delaware's and two, 5 wk. old bantam white leghorns. Post a picture of the chicks with the reward poster. The whole purpose of doing the poster would be to get the word out. If it was a kid, then their parents would find out through these posters. Meanwhile I would put up all sorts of false signs, like SMILE FOR THE CAMERA! YOU ARE BEING WATCHED! or false security system signs. Just scare the crap out of them so they don't want to come back. Good luck and so sorry that you had to go through this. How aggravating.

Sadly, I think we'll hear more about this kind of theft. People think you can't identify the stolen birds, so I hope most of us have photos at least. It's expensive to raise a chick and cheap to steal a layer or meat bird.
But neighbors? This is the kind of thing that starts feuds.

I like the idea of posting that your yard is supervised by a security camera.

Just like four legged thieves, they'll be back if they got away with something. I would plan for their return. I know some people have to padlock their buildings, but if you open for venilation, nasty humans will just cut your fencing to get what they want - and then put your wire cutters in their pocket for next time.

Good luck catching them.

Yep that's what I figure. I had Lori and her sister on coop watch all day today. I have to go spend the night at scout camp tonight, but am installing a camera out back when I get home tomorrow.

Pretty much going to beef up everything tomorrow.

how ironic...my DH just picked up two cameras with recorders for this very thing. We have had break in down the street and don't want to be next on the list. We already have a monitored home security and now we have a camera that will only record when something set it off. It will record for 20 seconds at a time. Let's hope it will work.

Wugh! I may be able to get to that feed store this week...probably not until Thursday. Do you want me to check to see if they have Delawares so Laurie doesn't have to do it?

Nothing is safe anymore from thieves and it seems the laws protect the criminal more than the victim.

I'd run some "juice" to the door latch of your coop when you are not using it. A nice jolt of electricity would probably put an end to this kind of snatch and run. I'd be furious and out for blood, myself. Then I would plot preventative measures and revenge!

This idea is awesome!

It's a good idea my dog has a reputation of biting (he a "sneak around and nip you on the back of the leg kinda dog). People always ask is he's mean because he sure sounds that way. He would never hurt anyone and spends all of his time in the house, but that's my secret.
