Hi,
We have a Sizzle hen and a Silkie/Amerucana hen that both have one chick. The Silkie/A mix "Glow" has a 9 day old chick and we set up our brooder in the coup so the flock knows she's there. We have been opening the side door so she plays with her chick in the coup a few times a day and its going well.
Our sizzle "Ruffles" just hatched a baby chick this morning. We were thinking of building a second brooder and putting her and her chick in there. Will two mama's fight if I was to open the side door of that brooder to let her out as well? Both brooders will have separate water and food.
Since it is still only high's mid-upper 40's here and lows in upper 30s Glow hasn't ventured out of the coup to the run with her chick so not sure she will for at least a few more weeks. We have a very large enclosed run but also leave the door open and our flock free ranges so they haven't bothered Glow and her chick at all. One time they came up when she and puffin were out and she about tore their head off so they immediately went back to the run and then back outside. I close Glow and Puffin up at night but they have a screen top so the flock can always smell, see and hear them. Would love any advice as this is our first time hatching eggs. A sparrow got one of Ruffles the other day and she killed the sparrow but it had already killed the baby chick so she has one more egg that might be viable and could have two baby chicks.
