I bought three pekin ducklings last march (2014) and they all turned out to be drakes. Lucky Me! The three of them got along great until this past fall when two of them started to try and mate with the third. They rip out his neck feathers until it bleeds. This winter I brought the poor guy into my garage so that he could heal. Once the weather warmed up I put him back with the other two, but I separated him with a 2' high fence. He has jumped the fence 3 times in the past week and once again has a bloody featherless neck.
I can't figure out why he wants to be with the other two when they abuse him so badly. I feel bad keeping him from the other ducks because ducks are so social, but I can't just let them abuse him. I'm not sure what the answer is to my problem. We built our coop & enclosure to only accommodate 3 ducks, so I can't add females to my existing 3 drakes. And who is to say that if I bought more ducklings that I would get females anyway.
I've thought about trying to find someone to possibly trade with, but I want to make sure my duck(s) would be going to a safe home as a pet, and not as a meal.
Has anyone had this problem before?
