My Coop
My Coop
Morning, all. This morning as I opened the back of the coop to clean, there were not one, but two soft-shelled eggs laying on he floor under the roosting limb, (a distance of only about 18"-24".) They were laying in the sand along with droppings. One was split open and when I picked it up, a complete yolk fell out, the other was intact. I've found one other soft shelled egg, about a week ago, maybe. Today's eggs were on the side of the coop in which one of my "is she laying or is she not laying" pullets roosts regularly, (it's also on the side my cockerel roosts,) so I'm wondering how many wonky eggs could she possibly lay before things get normal. If it WAS her...however, all my other girls are laying normal, strong shelled eggs, (a few have had calcium bumps,) so it's not a matter of their feed not containing enough calcium. I've just recently started adding electrolytes and probiotics to their water if that matters.

That happened to me, there's several reasons it could be some are
Young layer
Scared or distressed at night
Some hens may not be getting the calcium needed like others (I would supplement)
About to go through a molt
Not feeling well

I may be forgetting some

It can take up to a month or so with new layers for things to smooth out.
All birds manifest the nutrients they uptake differently,
so just 'adding stuff' to diet to try and solve an egg problem rarely works,
and can often cause more problems.
Keep it simple, a good balanced chicken ration and plain water...give it time.

I just want to have five hens laying five different looking eggs so I know everyone is laying and everything is fine. Argh!

It should happen, summer is tough on chickens they heat up when they eat so they lay off of eating as much etc, never hurts to leave out oyster shells for those that may need it, you don't want the egg breaking on the way out, that happened to one of mine once, not to scare you

This has happened to me before as well. It seems that giving them calcium(oyster shell) worked! If this happens frequently, it could be another issue, but I would guess they just need a little extra calcium! :)

We just have one little girl laying so far (a 17-week-old Isa Brown) and in 3 days, she has laid 5 eggs, but two were soft-shelled. The photo is today's two - a nice, normal egg on the right, and a weird blobby one on the left. (And we do know it's the same girl laying all these eggs, because she's the only brown egg-layer in that coop.)
