I'm not sure about the sex of the chick but I have a 2 week old Black Copper Maran chick that wants to bow up and spar with any other chick that comes close to him.

I want to assume it might be a roo, but hey guys, we all know these are female tendencies.

Is this just a chick feeling its oats or is this common behavior of roo?

I noticed my 2 of my roos would jump on the backs of the other chickens. My females did not appear to do this. The roos also had more comb development and it started turning pink pretty early on.

Chicks will spar, regardless of sex.
Even if you don't have a cockerel in the brooder, somebody has to be top bird.

True. With my first set of chicks (all females) they would peck, fluff up feathers, and charge each other. But they never did the jump on other chicks back thing. (not that I saw at least, and I spent a lot of time with them)
