My chick were having trouble breathing while sleeping, and sneezing. They were eating/drinking/pooping normally. One died I think we were the cause, aspiration of liquid. Another the littlest sneezes, sleeps and has difficulty breathing. So I gave Tylan 200 injecting .10 daily for three days, found out that was too much. Found some Tylan 50 and continued with the injections for two days. Four of the chicks show no signs of the disease, however the fifth, the littlest on just continued with the symptoms. Two days after taking them off Tylan, two of my chicks started sneezing? So I started them on Tylan again, no more sneezing after two injections, except the littlest one is still sneezing, heavy breathing, she has not gain weight in two days. Still eats/drinks/poops but not as much. Any suggestions?

btw I'm giving .10cc twice a day, hoping to wipe out what ever is trying to destroy my chicks.

Although I have no answers or suggestions (Too new at chicken keeping) I am sorry and wish you the best! Sarah

We had to cull the littlest chick today, she was getting any better. She continued to sneeze, had difficulty breathing, began to loose her balance, and she wasn't gaining weight, she lost in the last couple of days. It was so sad... my girls cried! We used the vinegar and baking soda method. I guess she was started with the fizzing noise and perhaps the smell of vinegar because she began to flutter. Then she started swaying as if she was drunk and final she passed out... I HATED doing it! Now it looks like there is a possibility that another has come down with the same symptoms... and still another just lays/stands by herself and sleeps all day. There are only two that seem healthy at this point. Looks like we might loose out whole little flock of six... it's a sad day for us here.

How small are the chicks? Are they LF or Bantam? Tylan 50 injectable dosing for bantam is 1/4 cc and 1/2 cc for standard once a day for 5 days. Is there any swelling around their eyes, on their face? I always start with vitamins and electrolytes when they're ill. If you can get them drinking that it will help. Are you using VetRx to help with symptoms, it works really well to help them breathe better. You can also try nasal flushing if you've not done that yet.

Nasal Flushing with Tylan 50- Add 2 CC of Tylan to 12 CC of water and flush the nostrils with 3-4 cc's of this mixture 2x day for 3-4 days. Hold their head down so they don't swallow too much of the Tylan. If they're very young, you may want to cut back on it. After flushing, add the VetRx to each nostril. I also add the VetRx to the top of their head and a drop under each wing (where they tuck their heads to sleep) every night.

If none of this helps you may need a different antibiotic. Gallimycin works really well for resp disease and can be used in conjunction with the Tylan but if they're really young I'd highly recommend contacting Doc Brown (the Chicken Doctor) at 1st State Vet. So very sorry for what your family is going through. Good luck!

I'm sorry for your loss. Do you have a livestock vet in your area? You could give them a call. I've put apple cider vinegar "with the mother" in my chicks water since they were 2-3wks old and last night we had our first ever issue (they are now 6wks old). I've posted here hoping for some advice as well.

Good News! Our prayers have been answered! Went out today and picked up some Duramycin-10, put it in their water this am and this evening no sneezing! no more in the corner sleeping! no labor breathing while sleeping! \0/ \o/ \o/ this is my daughters and I celebrating! We are truly sad that the littlest one might have been saved if we would have just waited one more day, but then maybe not. Our heavenly Father knows. Anyway, thanks for all the comfort and advice, I so appreciate everyone her on BYC. Blessings!
