Thanks this is what I was looking for! And my chickens are PETS too!!!I've had a worm bin going now for several years, I use a rubbermaid container with holes drilled in the bottom and a lid placed under the bin. I filled it with moist shredded paper and some veg scraps to start, then threw in the worms. I used red wigglers, I had read the night crawlers dont' do well in a bin as they like to tunnel too much for the confined space.
Harvesting the worms is a snap. I just take a couple handfuls of the bedding and put it on another lid or tray or something and put a light right over it. the worms don't like the light so the move down. Every 10-15min I go over and remove the top inch or so of bedding. When you get far enough down you remove a layer of bedding and all that's left is a wiggling PILE of worms. I've been doing this for my tropical fish but will continue/expand the operation when I get chickens in the future.
If you dont' want to buy worms and you have an outdoor compost pile, you can just pick worms from the pile to get started. Or just get some aged horse manure which is usually loaded with them.
