Uggo B!**Chick with deformed skull - NOW WITH PICS!**

I hatched one almost exactly like that; it didn't live. I agree with the others: this bird will likely have to be hand-fed or tube-fed its entire life. If you can make that committment, go for it. Otherwise.....not.

your sweet to have taken her. sham on the feed store for selling her tho. she may/may not live long, especially with difficult eating skills. um in dunno, good luck tho.

Wow, bless you for keeping him alive that long! Poor little guy. In the video he looked like you were his best buddy!!!

Uggli, as I have decided to call her, seems to be doing pretty well. Her legs are not deformed like the Madagascar, she is completely normal in every other way- it's just her skull that is weird.

Some good news, yesterday when I fed her in the morning, she ate pretty well, and then I left for work. When I came home and went to feed her, her crop was pretty full- she ate by herself! I was gone all day so she must have. I have her eating gamebird starter for extra nutrition and polyvisol without iron. Besides being loud when she can't see the others she seems normal and she's gained a little.

I'm going to wait and see. I'm keeping an eye on her weight. If she goes down, I will carefully monitor her mass and if she does not gain even with my assistance I will do the right thing and have her euthanized.

She is a sweet little thing and everyone here is rooting for her.

One last thing, if this is a skull deformity and not a case of crossbeak, is there any reason to think that it will not get worse? Are the two always hand in hand?

He was my best buddy too for the year he was with me and I have absolutely NO regrets. He had the run of the house and wore a diaper. There was never a time when he wasn't right by my side and he waited at the door for me to come home when I would leave. It took a long time for me to get used him not being here after he was gone. He was extremely smart and even though his skull deformities got worse as he got older, it never caused him any pain or suffering. He thoroughly enjoyed life and even enjoyed feeding times. The only ting you might have to watch for is fluid build up in the blind eye. There should be an undeveloped eye there and a very tiny opening. When it got plugged, he would scratch it. I would definitely give her a chance.

Don't you worry, I do a lot of animal rehab and I have a house full of animals! 2 dogs, 6 cats (all rescues!), and 7 chickens (not including the bunch of chicks I just hatched out!) and just released my squirrel babies. I can't have any more pets, under strict orders from the fiancee.

So she's not really 'taking up a slot' so to speak.

Today's update: Uggo is eating by herself!!! She is a little heavier than this morning. I don't know how she is doing it, but she is. I keep a deep food bowl in there for her so she must be scooping. I'm very encouraged.

Great news!!! I hope she keeps doing well!!

That's great that you are giving this little chick a chance. I would do the same. I had a Sultan with a cross beak. He was doing great until the neighbors darn Jack Russell killed him and his buddies. Keep up the great work...you never know.
I have a chicken that is blind in one eye. SHe's over two. Everyone told me to cull her when she was a week old. She gives me an egg every day and knows her name...."Kevin" After the movie "Way Up" ( I think that's the name of the movie)

Good luck! Keep us posted.
