uuuuggghhhhh ...why do people do that?, at this time of year we post on craiglist that we will take in the easter mistakes, as a 4-h poultry leader it's pretty easy to rehome them with my kids

I understand stores need to make a sale BUT they should also take into consideration who they are selling to, just ask a few questions, up sell... but back to reality...

I wish pet shops and such places would not sell chicks or rabbits around Easter. They end up in a lot of careless homes.

You said she's in Florida, perhaps some of our Florida members would be willing to pick them up. From the first post, the s-i-l doesn't really sound like she is ignorant. Just doesn't care about what happens to the chicks, as long as their not her responsibility.

She wanted her kids to have a moment of fun, but not take responsibility for their care. Pretty selfish of her.

Why didn't she just get her kids some plush bunnies or chicks. . . .

Hop over to the predators section and ask to borrow some pics of what happens to chickens who aren't protected... accidentally leave the door unlocked, bears, neighborhood thieves, snakes, dogs digging under or ripping through pens... and that's for the owners who actually TRY to protect their flock and with full grown birds... these little ones have no chance at all. Maybe if you show her pics of what her little kids are likely to find one day, guts and all, she'll get it through her thick skull that it's not going to be fun for all.

Then maybe Cochin's idea of asking Floridians for help might work...

Another sad point of this is what is she teaching her kids? How can it be a good thing if the kids are getting a kick out of scarring the chicks?

Tell her what you know about chick care (although you're new to chickens yourself, sounds like you've been doing your homework about them), and suggest either the "Raising Chickens for..." book or another one. Let her know that the chicks will be much easier to find homes for NOW than later. That's pretty much all you can do...
