ugh lockdown

you have converted him to the poultry way!

Don't know why this lockdown is so tough, maybe because of the meager number of much hoped for chicks

I'm one day 21 and the worst part of this hatch for me is that the incubator we're using on these has a solid wood door and I can't see anything.I'm wanting to open it so badly and check for pips .Before we do another hatch in it I told dh that he's going to have to put a window of some kind it.

I loaded up the incubator yesterday with eggs from our own EE, bantam cochins, and hard-working Icelandic hen. After the last disastrous hatch (6 out of 28) I'm paranoid as all get out; if the Spot Check doesn't run down its battery completely from my obsessive temperature-checking I'll be amazed! At least now I know about the insane hot spot in that incubator--104.5?! When three inches away is 99? Criminy!

There are also four peafowl eggs in there, which is a first for me: apparently somebody was laying eggs in Pea's nest when she got up to go eat. She started out with five and ended up with nine. Her five babies hatched yesterday, so that's it, she's done with that nest. Time will tell if the remaining eggs (at varying stages of development) can be salvaged. One was moving when I candled it, at least; I'll check them again at the mass candling on Tuesday.

Even though I just loaded my incubator and know I have 3 weeks to wait, I am still checking the humidity and temp constantly. The incubator has never failed and the temp and humidity is as steady as a rock but I still have to check it.
