Soooo since I've recently lost 2 button hens (1 was 'killed' by her mate and the other died of old age) adding another 2 bachelors (widowers

) to my non-declining supply of bachelor buttons, I've decided to set some button eggs. Please please PLEASE keep your fingers crossed that I don't hatch out all males!! It sure wouldn't be the first time I hatched an all-male batch of button eggs trying to get more hens!

18 eggs set today (March 17) because I KNOW I'll forget when I set these!

I have a rooster-button bator, everything else hatches mostly hens!

I usually at least have even numbers, but not with buttons. I remember 2 of my hatches last summer. Both of them were small (bad) hatches, only 5 birds each. I think they were 12-18 egg sets, not sure. The set that was from my birds hatched 5 beautiful little boy buttons and the 5 that hatched from my friend had 4 boys and 1 girl

So far there are at least 10 hatched. I also have some goslings hatching in the same hatcher. When I looked in there earlier 2 of the button chicks were inside the hatched gosling egg shell

I guess they thought it made a pretty good hidey house.

So 15 hatched but 1 was very tiny and didn't make it. I'll leave the other 3 eggs in the bator to see if they'll hatch but 15 is good
