Ugh! Stupid injured guinea!

Mama guinea just tried to commit suicide! She flew into the dog pen, and thankfully DBF was home to leap out there and save her. The pen is full of feathers, and mama guinea is wandering around the yard looking rumpled and baffled. I don't think she's hurt, but I will nab her after dark and look her over. Ugh. I am doing a serious wing clip tonight on EVERYONE.

Update: We just brought her in to look her over. She has minor scrapes on her headgear, and a big nasty gash right above her oil gland area. I put antibiotic ointment in both, but I'm still undecided about whether to cull or not. She bit a plug out of my hand when I was treating her and I very nearly decided then and there to cull

I've got her in a small private coop right now, and I think I'll get her a penicillin injection tomorrow. I've had chickens recover from similar wounds and they did fine, and I think of guineas as being made of tougher stuff, so I kind of want to give her a chance.
Anyone had anything similar happen?

I would not bother with the injection. Glop some antibiotic ointment on it and keep her up for a day or two. You are correct, Guineas are tough birds physically and can with stand a great deal. I had one raked by a Hawk, four deep grooves down his back. He just held his wings over the injury and kept on truckin'.

The dogs are ok with the birds in general, they ignore them so long as they are on the other side of the fence, but a flappin' crazy bird in their pen is just too much for them.

I hope your bird recovers soon. I think I would keep the guinea in the house, and just keep an eye on her for a couple of days. Maybe throw some bird netting over the dog pen to keep other like minded birds safe. Good luck.
