UGH.. too close

There are a number of people on BYC that raised their first LGDs inside. An 8 week old puppy isn't going to be able to do it's job anyway and throwing a puppy outside isn't going to teach it it's job.
The fact they did it doesn't make it the proper way to do it, and being members of a chicken forum doesn't mean they know a lot about true LGD's
An 8 week old puppy can learn how to bond with the animals, and learn what a threat looks , sounds, and smells like.

I've never heard of any knowledgeable breeder saying they should be indoors at all,
The vast majority advise against it, and most won't sell an animal to anyone who wants a house dog

Quote: He can't learn to be a "flock guardian" if he doesn't stay with the birds.
He won't suddenly turn into one when he gets older.
He'll still be a pet, since that is what he's learning

I have 3 Pyrs and they are indoor/outdoor dogs. My Male is very socialized and goes everywhere with me and he still does NOT let strangers in the yard. He is trained to act differrent on a leash then patrolling the yard.

A Pyr is not like a regular dog. They have a unique mental makeup. They are a guardian dog, not a guard dog. They are better at protecting living things and nurturing than just property.(but they can do it) Like anything else you get what you put into it.

In Russia 3 males are used to hunt bears. Youtube Great Pyrenees vs Wolf. (warning not for the faint of heart) My two females have taken out coyotes, coydogs, Crazy feral cats (I have 2 cats that sleep on the dogs) and one time a 200lb hog. I call the male my tank. He only gets involved if the females call for backup.
