Uh oh. Is this normal?

One of my family's rescues, a mix so mixed we had no CLUE what went into her, lets just say she was about the size and build of a yellow lab with coarse cream fur. Anyhoo, she lived for fourteen years and was sound of joints, but always slept that way with her back legs sprawled. Must have been comfortable for her!

We call that "frogging." A lot of dogs do it, and it is perfectly normal. There are theories out there that whether or not a dog does this indicates whether their hips are good or bad, but I'm not aware of any studies. I suspect it has nothing to do with the health of the joints and is just a position that some dogs find comfortable. Kind of like how I like to sit cross-legged on the floor and rest my weight on my elbows while leaning forward. It's quite comfortable for me, and most people just look at me like I'm crazy.

dainerra, both of my dogs assume that position regularly! Except my younger one is always sprawled across the doorway. Makes a great draft stop in the winter, but makes it kind of hard to open the door. They also like to do that in their crates. The best was the time my younger one tried to do it in a soft sided crate at a rally trial. I was talking to someone across the room and looked over to see the top of my crate bumping around. I decided I'd best go back and see Tatsu before he got too impatient. After the first few steps, it slowly dawned on me that the top of my crate was not yellow. The top of my crate is orange, the sides are yellow. He had gone to lay up against the side like that and rolled the whole thing over! Then he couldn't figure out how to roll it back the way it was supposed to be.

My Boston "Terrorists" do it all the time and drag their bellies through the grass or carpet. The funniest thing is that one of my goats do it too over the soft green grass. I think it feels good.

Omigosh!! I thought MY dog was the only one who did that!!! U have a TOTALLY adorable dog!
