Uh oh, why am I ordering more chicks already???

haha, too funny. Sort of like potato chips, you can't eat just one.

I would take so many more if they didn't eat so darned much, lol...........They are more entertaining to me right now then TV, movies, anything. I go out and just sit and watch them play. SO DARNED CUTE!!

I know you asked farmerwoman and not me, but I got my 8 chicks at MyPetChicken.com their minimum shipment depends on where you live, I guess the farther they have to ship, the larger minimum order they have. I seem to remember that this number can be as small as three if you live close by. For me in Colorado, the minimum was 7, but I ordered a nice round 8...2 Welsummer, 2 Barred Plymouth Rock, 2 White Plymouth Rock, 2 Black Jersey Giants. They are all doing well with the exception of one who still has a pasty/poopy bottom that needs to be wiped 2 - 3 times a day. She is perky and active but getting bald

There was a thread posted here a week or so back about success with MyPetChicken. If memory serves, the person who started the thread had had a bad experience, but everyone else who responded had positive things to say.

Aw your gonna want more anyway

I ordered from Ideal 3 yrs ago and their min is $25, so I got 14. THey did GREAT!
I was down to 5 hens, so this time I ordered from My Pet Chicken. I got 7 (which was my min) Buff Orp Pullets. They are 7 wk old and doing great!! I got them back in May before it got so terribly hot. I would NOT order any chicks right now due to over 100 degrees EVERY day. We are burning up here in TX

I just placed an order with Meyer. Their minimum order is 3 chicks - but of course I ordered more than that. I've read both good and negative reviews about Meyer. I believe most hatcheries have about the same success rate - it just depends on weather and distance. I ordered from Meyer because there seemed to be more variety and I like the lower limit.

Yep, as others have said, I ordered from My Pet Chicken. The minimum for my area is only 4, but you do need to pay for express shipping which is $35, but that will arrive overnight to my area, so I'd rather do it that way anyway and have them spend as little time in shipping as possible. My first 6 all made it and are still doing great!

I think 4' at the bottom is plenty. That Hardware cloth is not cheap. I guess it all depends on your area. My neighbor lost 25 chickens in one night to a weasel. But me only being a mile away have never had a problem. My son and I are pretty good with the .22. I keep traps set all the time but after the first week or so it seems like I got rid of everything.

Yeah, Ive come to realize that the only things the larger wire on top would permit would be the smaller things like rats, weasels (not even sure if we have any in our area), snakes, etc. Im just still a little worried about that. Traps would be hard, since we have curious dogs and all we have is one really really old bb gun, though my husband is talking about getting a new one.
