Uh oh, why am I ordering more chicks already???

I have found myself in the same situation, I have 5 now, but for some reason, just can't get the desire to start a few from eggs out of my system.

I wouldn't be worrying just yet...

Thursday-

DH: How much cash do I need for the feed store?

Me: Around $50

DH: What do I need to get!?

Me: Oh just 100 lbs of Egg pellets, 50lb chick starter, and 50 lb rabbit pellets

DH: Surely it won't be that much!

an hour later...

DH: Hunny I think we need to sell some chickens. I just spent $48 at the feed store.

(and for anyone wondering...this will last a lil over a week....)

Friday-
We went and delivered some straw...

and then I took a detour and surprised my hubby by buying 3 layers, 5- 2months, and 7 chicks... (But but but they were ONLY $20!!)

don't worrie about it.. I"m like that.. I hve 12 chickens.. 11 baby's and their momma.. if you read my intro thread you'll see how i cam upon 12 chickens.

we plan on keeping mom and at least 3 or 4 of her chicks, , but I am already Planning and brainstorming HATCHING CHICKS!!! I guess I want some chicks that will come to me and not run for the hills like mommy chickens' baby's do. but also I don't have the chance to try to hold them as mommy turns into attach chicken.. even when one of the baby's slip under the chickenwier when I moved the brick holding it down for a moment.. I turn my back and in that split second that lil booger got out. an was between the brick n the chiken wire. n do you think she would let me near him/her to put them back???? had to get my son to distract her while i scoop the lil chick up and pop it back under the wire n replace the brick.

Well, and I am not sure I am ready to admit this, but - I ordered 9 chicks from MPC on June 30, and they will ship on Monday, 7/18. Then, I actually placed a second order this past Monday, July 11, for 5 more to be shipped on September 12.

I DON'T EVEN HAVE MY FIRST ORDER YET!!! At least yours are 5 weeks old. My first batch of chicks haven't even hatched yet!

But I purposely spaced them out so that the second batch won't arrive until the first is already in their coop. Unless my (normal) math is wrong your babies will be about the same age span apart that mine will - about 8 weeks.

Also like you, I wanted certain breeds and that is when I could get an Easter Egger, 2 Salmon Faverolles, a Speckled Sussex, and a Black Silkie (and they sell out fast) so I had to act now! Right?

Of course I am already planning my third order to be placed in early spring of next year. My coop/run should accommodate about 32 - 36 chickens so really I am starting slow. ha ha - slow

Love chicken math!!!

Ha! I could have written that post. Mine are about 7 weeks old and I just bordered the Easter Eggers I originally wanted. It sure will complicate things mixing the flock, but my kids will flip over the colored eggs.

I'm new to chickens this year, was going to get a dozen chicks figuring I'd lose a few. I got 12, a mix of SS, GLW's, EE's and Columbian Rocks and one lone Australorp. I was sad that they didn't have BO's & BR's, which is what I really wanted. The next week they did, so I got 8 more. Up to 20 now... THEN...I saw an ad for a free Black Orp roo, so I had to go get him. THen I decided I didn't want to wait until October for eggs, so wanted a couple laying hens and they might as well be Blue Orps to go with the Black Orp roo, then the breeder threw in a couple chicks since one of the hens had gone broody. Chicken math zero to twenty five in about two months. lol

LOL
I think a lot of us have failed chicken math !
My "few" chickens that I got 4 years ago was just the start.
I think I have about 70 or so now.
And A incubator full that is hatching now.
GOTTA LOVE CHICKEN MATH
