OMG what an egg! Mine have just started to lay and I am getting an occasional weird egg...is that normal? Had a double yolker, one with a paper thin shell, a bit of an odd shape...things like that...

I wish you could have seen my husband and me doubled over laughing when he came back inside, showing me this egg! We got so tickled. Our chicken stories have been a constant source of amusement amongst ourselves & our family/friends via emails; but for the past couple of weeks...smooth sailing made for a very disappointed email audience. Then, the mongo egg. Ahhh, it's never dull raising chickens.

Our most recent story, before the "ouchie" egg, was when one of my RIs decided to go to a considerable amount of trouble to hike a leg up & over the angled-up heating lamp at sometime during the cold winter night. Nobody ever accused them of being smart, right? Burnt, black feathers in the coop, a black smear on the heat lamp the size of my hand, and an odd feather-do on my hen were the party favors to that wild night.

(I'm still laughing at the "donut cushion" comment somebody left...and I read another comment in another big egg post that I liked, too: "Bet that made her eyes water..."

Those are usually double-yolkers and a lot of them lay those when they first start laying. Ours have been laying since November and we're still getting them - we have 23 pullets. Also, not to worry because God has taken care of the chickens by designing their eggs to be soft as they are laying them and then hardening up just after. That way, it isn't painful for them to lay those huge eggs.

Good to know on the soft eggs that harden later! Thanks for that info. All kidding aside, I am crazy about our chickens and like to know they're okay.

My husband just walked in this a.m. with 2 more eggs from our layers. Again, a double yolker huge one!!
