UK Member Please Say HI

Hello there!!
I'm Avril from Cannock Wood on Cannock Chase in Staffordshire. UK
I wanted to have 3 Cream Bars but I felt guilty not rescuing Batteries when they are desperate for rehoming so I decided to have them instead. Not got them yet but I am on the waiting list. I hope to have at least one CLB at a later date if I am successful and the little ladies are happy.

@StaffordshireLady Welcome to the thread Avril!

I have 3 ladies from the commercial (barn eggs) farm near to me that I took in. They cost a £1 each and have turned out good birds. They were a bit scraggy when I first got them but with a bit of TLC they soon feathered out. Good luck with your new ladies when they arrive.

Thank you for your encouragement.
I am very eggsited about getting going again after so many years but I feel the need! I paid £5.00 each for mine but it was a donation really to the Charity that tries to rehome batteries and barns. How long should it be before they get their feathers back?

£5 seems steep for ex-layers; I had mine for £2 each, though that was a few years back now. Welcome to the thread, Avril; I'm sure you'll fall in love with them fast. Have you kept chickens before?

It's turned into a slip-and-slide here; ice everywhere. It would be funny to watch the chooks attempting to land on ice if I didn't freak out every time in case they mess themselves up. Anyone seen much snow yet?

Thank you. Yes we have had snow for a week now. It's not cleared completely yet as we face north and are in the shade.
I just hope that it's a bit warmer when they come at the end of the month - February as I can't bear to think of them outside I will probably ask hubby to bring the hen house into the garage.
I tried twice to keep chickens 50 years ago and each time it did not go well.
The money was a suggested donation as they do a lot of work rehoming and giving support and they are all volunteers. I don't mind at all.
I love this site everyone is so encouraging.

Yes we’ve had snow :( Then it melted a bit then we had a freeze then we had more snow. A slight thaw again and -5c last night :barnie A slippery ice rink down at the yard where I keep Harry horse this morning. Was very slippery under foot. Starting to defrost again now & hoping that’s it for now! The snow was very pretty though!

I imagine an agent would need to cover transport costs and interim feeding, too. It's great to see so many people working against the production model of disposable everything. I wouldn't worry about them in the cold; so long as there is good ventilation and no extreme temperature fluctuations they don't seem to mind, though I have a few old hen's puffed up like pigeons during the day, grumbling about the weather.

Lovely video, @Yorkshire Coop. Our dogs love the snow, too, as do the chickens; everyone seems to want to eat it. I managed to go teacup in the yard today; cruel irony that it's clear of ice now.

Yup... crashed my car in it! Hit black ice at 5AM Friday, span my car and hit a barrier side on at 30mph. Bent front and back panels, broke break light and I may have bent my rear axle, undrivable. The damage doesn’t look too bad! The wheel looks like \ that though. Insurance company is coming to collect it tomorrow, hope it’s repairable.

Avril hi and welcome! So lovely of you to get som ex-batts - and a little brae for starting with as they can be a little more work - just a steeper learning curve I guess! I'm sure you'll be fine and glad you have found us here to ask any questions that crop up!

Absolutely - good on them and 5 quid isn't a lot really with everything they probably do getting it all sorted.

Just gorgeous! So jealous!
