What do you do (if anything) to stop/lessen any impact of egg football during hatching?

I tend to just leave them unless they are eggs through the post with wonky air cells. In that instance I will hatch them in cut down egg cartons. Stops the football and you can monitor progress easily. Down side is if you have a wrong end pip you can't see it.

Hi there, they're 13weeks old. I've got a sneaky suspicion that 2 of them are cocks tho. The kids are so upset. :(

:( Have you posted in the what breed gender section? Lots of help there on sexing birds.

Oh no isn't that just typical.

It's definitely been a cockerel year for me !!

My Wyndotte bantam chicks , I have 4 cockerels & 1 Pullet!!!

And my Marans are looking like about 10 cockerels and 5 Pullets :he

Goodness that's bad luck :(

3-week old chicks and 1 day old chicks get on happily together. :ya

The little babies go hide under the brooder if they need to escape...

The 3-week olds look like gangly teenagers who are not the least bit interested in playing with their younger brothers & sisters.
:celebrate

They sure do look settled and I'm pleased it's worked out for you :clapHave you started putting your 3 weeks old outside yet? They look well feathered :)

Errrrrr Mmmmmm just cleaned out the brooder and it might be 9 Pullets :fl

:fl :fl :fl

Good for you mate :thumbsup

What breed are the day olds ?

I have 3 hen breeds under a Cream Legbar Roo:
Ex Battery
Black sex link
Cream Legbar.

So... I'm hoping to have some pretty eggs, but at the minute I've got a complete mix of barred multi-coloured chicks !!!

I've had a busy week at work, but I was going to today, then it's been raining all day !!
Perhaps at the weekend. When Do you they'd be ready to stay outside overnight?
Getting my office back would be handy ;)

I would say they're ready now to be honest. I always go with my gut if they look ready and act ready then give it ago. I put my Aylesbury ducklings out at nearly 3 weeks!

Yes where has the summer gone? :(

I usually go on how they act as to when I turn the heat off. I only brood in the house until I know everyone is eating and drinking ok then they go to the shed with heat. Usually about 4/5 weeks is when I turn the heat off but I do it gradually, start with it off during the day and when they seem ok I turn it off altogether. I let them out into the run at about 2 weeks so they get acclimatised to outside well before the heat is off totally. They soon figure if it starts to rain or gets nippy to pop back in the shed for cover and heat.

Wow they are big and look great! I do like ducks but the mess stops me from getting them :sick I'm a neat freak

It's been nice weather for ducks again here today :(
It's done nothing but rain on and off since yesterday morning. I even went back to the yard at 9 last night and got Harry horse and his field buddy in. The forecast said an odd shower, totally wrong again as it was persistent

Yeah, I love the idea of Ducks & Geese but with Great Dane sized poo I will have to pass.

Yes forecast said rain would start at 3pm today, so I had my day planned out.
11.30 the heavens opened, so never mind

I agree with the poo part I have to go out everyday and clean up after them :sick but the personality of these guys make up for it! They're nearly 8 weeks on Tuesday so more growing to do! The weather has been crappy the chickens aren't impressed especially if their hair is a mess :lau they are loving the attention though as I bring them in with me

Hi. I'm from Essex. New to chickens but want fresh eggs. I have 2 brown ones which I consider the normal chickens and I have a little white bantum. I rescued them all and they are lovely. I recently rescued a chick that was being bullied by bigger birds but since joining this group I've found out he's a cockerel so he's got to go I'm afraid. Ive contacted my local poultry provider and asked if they can take him.
Hazel.
