Put a towel over it and leave it a while, it's the only way I can do it

It's gone it was there for ten minutes gasping for breath I felt like I was making it suffer even more so I quickly took it out and ended the suffering. I'm in such a state I can't stop crying poor thing

It's only natural to think like you are but as you said unconsciousness will have taken over
You really did the right thing for your bird and showed it compassion. The tears will be there for you and I am so very sorry. Culling sure can be hard but don't beat yourself up about it

Thankyou that makes things abit easier. It's not suffering now poor thing I've been worrying about it for days I'm kind of relieved it's done now.

Good evening everyone, hope all is well in the world of backyard chickens!
Quick question for anyone who knows anything about ducks; what breed is this? I rescued it from my next door neighbours garden, so naturally thought it must be a mallard, because they're the only wild ducks we have around us. But now it is getting bigger it seems to be turning white on its chest, and is getting white streaks down its eyes where a mallard would be brown...
The red photo is from when I rescued it three weeks ago, and the other photo was from this morning...grown at a remarkable rate!
Any ideas?? Ta! ^_^

yes hi love that looks like a khaki Campbell to me looks exactly same as mine when she was a baby and they do grow quick

ok as I thought the poor thing was dead I took pictures of what it looked like before I started to unzip as for the other 2 I candled them 1 is definitely alive and kicking the other I cannot tell so I dabbed them both with warm water and put them back

I can't see anything wrong with it anyone offer any explanation
btw. There was no blood left

I've had this many of times could of had internal problems or to weak. It's sad when that happens so close to hatching keep a close eye on the other two hopefully it will hatch naturally less stress for you

Things do get easier and time is a great healer, it may not seem like that right now but it is

Ugh No blood and yolk indicates it was ready to hatch. The pip looks a little low on the egg so it may not have been in the fully correct position for zipping the egg and hatching. Or the shell could have possibly been too hard for it to break through and zip. Sometimes though they are just not strong enough to hatch them themselves.

another update another egg is well on its way I come down this morning and could hear cheaps a few hours later it was still in same state of play so I got some warm water on some kitchen roll and moistened the egg but the shell is like concrete so I picked a bit round to help it a little now I've left it again see how it does I think that what's happened to other poor thing egg to hard to her out is that possible?

It is possible I had some ducklings die because their shell was like concrete. I'm unsure why someone more experienced can tell you that. You may have to help it abit if it's unable to get out.

I think it's something to.do.with moisture from my research I'm anxious coz I don'want it to tire but also don't wanna interfere and do something wrong and I'm worried my hen might kill it she just sat softly clucking at mo
