Hi everyone!
I would like to thank @Yorkshire Coop for introducing me to this thread! I wasn't sure as to how many people on here were from the UK, but now I've found you all! Yippee! ^_^
I am Georgie and I'm from Ilkley in West Yorkshire pretty new to this chicken keeping malarkey, only really started last year and hatched my first lot of chicks in May, but loving it! If anyone has any hints or tips for me that would be awesome, I am currently trying to establish a new generation of Scots Greys, which some of you, or all of you, may know are a rather rare breed...and guessing from my low hatch success rate I can see why :/ but my recent little darlings are the most fluffy chicks I have ever seen! Only 24 hours old and very noisy!

@Yorkshirecoop I've got a young cockerel installed, just 1 of last year's hatch that survived the fox. My neighbours are seriously on the attack, I've no clue what me or my chickens ever did to them, they've been here 2 years alongside my flock and never said a bean until now! We have to put up with their barking Staffordshire Bull Terrier all day but I'd never moan. I guess some people have nothing better to do with their time. Inspection off landlord tomorrow so may have to pen them in or they may have to go...God, i hope not





Why is it that roaming cats and barking dogs are seen to be 'OK' by those who have them, but people feel free to complain about chickens ?!?!?

Hi Kim

Thanks for the lovely comments about my photos/animals. Not sure how I got that photo of Tasha looking so spruce and white..... she must just have come out of her moult. Most of the time she is a scruffy off white mongrel with the tips of her beard/moustache stained with dirt and her comb all dry and shrivelled because she is broody..... I hardly recognised her when I found that photo, apart from that wild, quirky look in her eye and the fact she is the only white moustachioed hen that I have. In that photo of her on the roost, she actually has two rows of chicks underneath her and she is at full stretch to cover them all..... must be very tiring sleeping with your arms out like that all night!

The horses spend hours standing at the gate on the roadside waiting for passing pedestrians to stop and feed them mints/bread/carrots. They are standing at that gate in the photo watching me strip haylage off a big round bail and bag it up to carry inside the stable for them.....so it's extremely easy to get a shot of them standing together looking over a gate unless they are out at grass when nothing will get their attention! 

It looks like that roaming chick may be back with it's mother, Daisy, again now. I'm not sure Portia really had much say about it, it's just cheeky and seems to have invited itself for a sleep over.... with a duvet like that, who could blame it! 
Went to check my new broody nests this morning and there had been some nest swapping..... I think perhaps the cross had got off the nest for a break and another leghorn had jumped in to lay, so when she came back, she got onto Margo's nest whilst she went for a break. When I was up there checking, she was hovering nearby not really sure what to do with herself but I'm pretty sure she will have jumped back on one of them as soon as it was vacated. I will just have to remove additional eggs as they appear. 
I climb the ladder every day to collect eggs, so I hardly even think of it as a ladder anymore. It goes up through a hole in the rotten floor boards above and their nests are literally at the top of the ladder, so I don't have to get off and back on most of the time. Once they hatch, I'll just go up with a bucket and drop the chicks and broody into the bucket and carry them down and put them in the sideboard, which by then, should have been vacated by Tasha and her chicks. It's going to be a bit crowded in there with 2 broodies and their chicks assuming both clutches hatch, but they'll manage for a few days at least.

I think Tasha is fabulous looking and goodness she has some will power to keep those wings out all night on two rows of chicks!! Oh yes I can remember you saying about everybody feeding the beasties treats, as always the way to their heart is through food! Now if only this were true of Harry I maybe able to get some good pics of him. I'm afraid he's a fussy eater and I dare not give him carrots incase he chokes :/

Do you just Mark your eggs in the broody nests so you know which to take out? It still seems an obstacle course to get to them and you are far braver than me!

Was hoping to get out riding this morning but the weather put pay to that Raining and that really fine stuff that makes it all seem even wetter. Both me and Harry are fair weather folk so it was a no from both of us. Going in the morning though (weather permitting) with one of the other liveries from the yard

So glad you could pop over here and join us! Yes quite a few more of us than you were thinking I guess! Lovely chicks there! I've read on the Scots and yes they are rare so congrats on yours
Hints and tips? You can never have enough chickens Enjoy them!

@rebrascora Thanks for the advice and lovely comments on my lady, she is super, she was pricey but worth it. Such a gentle soul too. I never thought about a reaction to the Ivermectin, oops! Hopefully it is just an early moult and nothing untowards.

How's it gone with the landlord? ok!
Have you been round and asked them what their problem is? At least this way you can prove you have been willing to resolve any issues they seem to have. After all that time though I can't see what they have to moan about

The landlord visit went okay, thanks for asking. He just said we need to keep them further up the garden and away from the back door of the house???!! They free range all day so they'll just have to have a cordon put in place to stop them coming too close, fortunately their coop (which they only use as sleeping quarters and for laying) are a good 10 foot from the house so they'll now only have beyond the coop, thats still a lot of grass though. We've got a lot of fox proofing of fences to so though first.The neighbours said they don't want to speak to me!!!!! So i still am unsure of their grievances. She's had 2 years of eggs here and there and was fine then. Just hope moving them out of her sight will help. Thanks again for asking. Sasha x

I did pop by the other forum, thank you for the link. The answer was one person thought it's a boy, and it's breed is 'probably a meat bird'
My first time keeping chickens, so I'm learning a lot.

What were they sold to you as? Leghorns wasn't it?

They were free from a local primary school, but we were told they're leghorns, yes.

Not a breed I have kept but I think they could be leghorns having looked at pics of them, either way nice birds you have there

Not sure if this helps but i have a leghorn hen....have attached a few photo's for comparison (obvs not the RIR rooster ((bless his soul, he's no longer with us courtesy of Mr. Fox)) or the ginger Legbar X hen). They're not great pic's but maybe they will help you determine the breed and/or sex:....

This is "Luna", our 2 year old leghorn. Was laying from about 18 weeks, big, beautiful, tasty white eggs, every day all year round with no extra light. Our little trooper, loves to come in our house to grab a treat but a little flighty and not keen on being handled at all. Love her though. Sasha xx

I know.....if i knew what the problem was, i could've dealt with it a lot sooner, still don't actually know. Any how, Landlord is more than happy as long as we keep them away from the back door for whatever reason ....we also had a random inspection from the Environmental Health this morning (1st thing aswell!)!!! Clean bill of health from them, obviously ordered by the pre-mentioned neighbours....commented on a "lovely clean environment enriched by the free ranging with rat proof feeders and all birds in super condition"....was really quite chuffed! Up yours neighbours! New fencing due Wednesday for the new improvements to the recommended "free range" area so lots of work in the pipeline to fit in around everything else...somehow. Adore my birds so will do anything necessary. Right, back to the Wales match (bit bored of footie now, bring on the rugby or tennis!). My drake is in the vets overnight tonight with a diagnosed fracture after his x-ray this afternoon ...mega vet's bill due i'm sure, poss surgery if he needs a pin in the break, please all pray that after a night/morning of anti-inflammatories it's just a pulled ligament as the vet is suggesting an old break that has been slightly aggravated by a fall/trip down a small hole on the land...aaarrrggghhhh......Thanks all Sasha xx
