Hi Kim
Lovely to hear from you.
Not ridden out since last Thurs when my sister nearly lost Rascal in a peat bog! We were trying out a bridleway we had never ridden before. It started out very wide and inviting then through a wicket gate into a farmers field, then another wicket gate into a little copse. The surface was green and grassy with a few fallen logs lying about and the ground a little soft but not muddy. 20 feet from the gate Rascal's front end disappeared quickly followed by his back end and he was literally up to his belly and floundering. Jo stepped off and he eventually managed to haul himself onto some slightly more solid ground. We didn't dare go any further in case it happened again and finding a way around it was challenging as we could walk on the surface without even getting wet or muddy boots, but the horse's weight was just causing them to drop through the grassy surface and get sucked into the peat below..... it was scary! I've sent an email to the appropriate person at the council regarding it because it needs a closure until it can be made safe. We rode 8 miles and that was the only bit of wet ground we encountered and it was before the rain arrived so goodness knows what it will be like now but at least anyone else approaching it should see the great marks Rascal left in it and have some warning before they get into it. Thankfully he was uninjured and probably less shaken than we were but I'm not sure if we would have been so lucky if it had been Rebel or MeMe as they would undoubtedly have panicked more, which is always dangerous in those situations. Needless to say, we will be sticking to routes we know in the future!
Having a bad time with Foxes again. I've lost quite a few in the last few days including my broody and her chick. The foxes in the area are obviously on the increase, but so many people in he village feed them, it's hardly surprising. I could do with borrowing your Charlie! Our wedding job with the horses went well last weekend but I was so relieved when it was over. Too much work and stress for my liking..... will be happy sticking to jogging around the roads for our own pleasure for the rest of the season. Zak is constantly getting into trouble and has a new gash or bite mark nearly every day from getting caught on the fence or winding Ernie and Archie up. He is such a tinker!
Think that is all my news. Hoping that our next ride out is less traumatic!
How are things with you? Have you finished hatching for the year? Hope you are not working too hard.
Best wishes
Barbara
@rebrascora
Oh heck Barbara that is so scary!! That really would be one of my worst nightmares! My others are falling in water, I used to ride down the side of the canal but as I got older and especially after I had Charlie I stopped that as falling in scared me. Other is falling into ditches, was riding for someone in the village getting their point to pointers fit before they took them hunting and one got reverse gear heading for a great big ditch! That made me scared of big ditches after I felt us going in it backwards! Thank god it had the sense to stop before we went over backwards! I'm so glad to hear Rascal got himself out of there and that he was ok. Gosh you sure were lucky that he didn't panic. I hope your email spurs the council on to get something done about it and that no one else gets in there. Some warning signs would not go a miss there I think.
Weather has been horrid here over the weekend so no flags here :-( Harry is not fussed though and we did have a routine going on a weekend so to not go this weekend was a disappointment. We went out the previous weekend on our own and he was much better than expected! Reasonably quiet and we called in at my mum's but he would not stand still for her to take a pic! She took quite a few but only one or two was any good or not blurry!
That's a pain on the foxes

Sorry you have lost some, especially the broody and chick. Dont get me started on the people that feed them, I could write a book but each to their own I guess. You can certainly borrow Charlie and his Dad, they could make a trip out of it and I could visit to talk chicken and horses
Glad the wedding went well

I get what you mean on it being hard work though rather than jogging for your own pleasure. Weddings are a load hype and waste of money for me anyway. Plus it costs a bomb to get divorced! We have rubbed along quite nicely here for years without getting married.
Yep that's me done for hatching this year, my numbers haven't grown so I've been good but still had the fun of hatching. That's a win win for me

I could get into this contract hatching for other people and if someone comes along wanting some eggs doing before the end of our so called summer I will get the incubator out again
Hope you have a fab week Barbara
