Hi there,

A few days ago I came home to find my Pekin Bantam cockeral missing. I was devastated, I absolutely adored him! Loveliest chock. The weirdest thing about it though, is that there were absolutely no traces whatsoever of him. No feathers, nothing. They are free range, so I presumed he had waddled off into the woods out of boredom (his hen is sat on eggs right now).

To the point:

A couple of days ago after having yet another inspection of.my garden for traces, I did find some feathers-but not loads. The feathers I found were a small pile from his neck (he had a distinct pattern on his neck so I knew it was from there). My first thought was fox, however in the past fox/dog attacks have been a complete massacre, resulting in feathers absolutely everywhere usually with some blood. Also, the feathers were found right next to my pigs pen, and our foxes are absolutely terrified of the pig. (Seriously, pigs are a great fox deterrent!). To add to it too, he died ib the middle of the day (he was last seen by my dad when he left for a meeting at 12 and I came home at 3 to find the chock missing).

I'm pretty confident it wasn't a fox or a dog. Ans the cats around me never went near my roo because he would try to attack them if they did (he was great).

So for the last few days its left me wondering what on earth took him, and why my hen wont hop off the nest for a five minute dustbath like she normally does. (I feel terrible for her, she's alone now that he's gone as I only had two).

Today, I may have found the culprit. An absolutely MASSIVE bird of prey, he looked a bit like a buzzard, was perched on my pig pen which was right next to where I found the small amount of feathers, eyeing up the garden. He was HUGE, never seen one like him. I've also never seen a bird of prey in the garden, so I cant help but think that maybe the buzz saw an opportunity and has come back to see if there's anymore.

I dint know, does anyone have any opinions on what it could have been? What a buzzard really go for a feisty bantam cockerel?

Yep, that's the one I saw for sure! I had no idea a buzzard would go for a chicken. In the 6 years i've been keeping chickens i've never once had a buzzard attack!
