Um, I'm thinking I'd rather have the ticks...

LOL!!

I'm looking for about a dozen eggs to hatch our first guineas this spring. We have about 15 acres of mostly woods so hopefully they won't be disturbing anyone

I've been trying to convince my fiances family to let me get guineas.

I have my fiance convinced (he gives in to me pretty easily

.

I told his mom about the tick control so the one person who doesn't like farm life, doesn't want more animals on the farm is on my side and wants guineas..she's sick of having ticks her bed...

I struck a deal with his aunt that if she lets me bring home guineas, I will let her have geese.

Now its onto my future father in law. He's gonna be a tough cookie. Like the rest of them he hates guineas... He has been wanting hogs and cattle again.. My fiance and I will be the ones caring for the hogs/cattle... Perhaps I'll strike a deal similar to the geese...

Y'know what's funny? I may get to hatch some guineas later this spring!

A coworker has some, and says his are too stupid to hatch & raise their own babies. He said if I'd hatch some for him, I could play with the babies and then give the guineas back when they get noisy

Love the guineas. Just have to love them or we'd strangle them.

Weird little birds.

The standing in the road yelling at the cars - however here 99% of traffic DOES stop and goes "WTH is that thing???" gets out to see the weird yelling bird, they scream again and run back to the yard. Did have the idiot boy get smushed by a car, but you know, survival of the fittest and all that.

The standards running at the peas, then OMG OMG OMG the boy displayed and crap BYE................. as they sprint far, far away. As such, the dears live with the chooks and ducks.

The jumbos going OMG OMG OMG crap evil fluffy bouncing marshmellows BYE......... if they see the bantam Cochins. As such, they live with the peas going THANK YOU for being able to totally avoid those evil bouncing marshmellows.

The hopping on the back of the goats, horses and dogs and riding until OMG I can't see my friends!!! Scream bloody murder and run around until you find your friends.

Noisy buggers I guess, we have 30 of the standards, 7 of the jumbos. But we also have 9 peafowl, so noise is a relative point. Plus kids. I swear, the kids are still louder.

However, no matter how annoying/stupid the guineas may be, they will forever be welcome. The first summer, 5 guineas got into 3 tick nests and just gobbled up the ticks. We are talking they gobbled up thousands of ticks. They also do the chigger stripping, that is NICE. Two of the jumbos have learned to catch mosquitos also.

They can b'deep or perQUAT or whatever noise they make all day long as long as they keep eating the bugs.

I've had people whip u-turns and come back to stop and take pics of mine. They remind me of the Doh-Doh Birds from Ice Age. LOL

Ok this post has got my attention. We are getting some eggs next week to hatch. I thought they were small?

I saw some pics of some and they were big. We live on 4 1/2 acres will my neighbors hear them? Are they louder than 3 roo's? Sorry to hijack your OP. If someone will PM me so as to not take up space I would greatly appreciate it. I know nothing about them. What am I getting into

There were three crates of guineas at the auction I went to last weekend...I bent down to see them closer, remarked at their dinosaur likeness, was hollered at, and then promptly fell over in surprise.

I believe my hubby made the same comment as an above poster's, "We are NEVER getting any of THOSE things, so dont get any ideas."

We got ours last summer as chicks. So we kept them penned up for about 4 months so they wouldn't run off or et eaten. We started out with 7 and have 5 left. I'm not sure how to tell the sex of them. I was told the hens have smaller "waddles" than the roos. So if thats true, we have 3 roos and 2 hens. Only one of them has been caught hanging out around a brush pile that has several entrances to get under it. I've seen her actually under there many times but see no eggs. I want to get to them before something else does and put them in the bator or under a broody.

So what I would like to know is this hen about to lay eggs?

About the noise, OMG!!!! I clearly understand. DH works midnights and we live in a trailer so of course they have to get near where he's tryng to sleep and start in with that incessant noise. When i'm outside I'll clap my hands and they shut up for about 30 seconds. I even went out last night to find out what they where alarmed about. All I found was the sound of an owl hooting. They have been living out roaming around on their own and sleeping in the tree by the coop. We'll find out how well they take care of our tick and chigger population. Every spring I get ate up by chiggars. They search me out and attack. Last year I had over 152. Thats when DH stopped counting as he was dabbing all my spots with clear fingernail polish. I sure hope they've spent the winter searching out most of the population. Everytime I go outside I fear it's attack time. We have a strong wind coming from the south and the woods is just south of our home. It's blowing all those little blood suckers right at us.

My 14 Guineas are very loud as 8-9 are females, but I have to say I love them. My house is well insulated so I don't hear them at all when indoors except on one end and then the T.V. is on that end & will easily drown them out there. I don't mind the way they sound, but it does seem to un-nerve a lot of people. Mine have been roosting in the trees one day and then like schizos, the next day, they are all back roosting in the coop. When they are in the trees, they must drive my two closest neighbors crazy because the females holler all night -- and the sound carries because they are like 60-80 feet up -- but it is the reason I moved to the country and not in any city limits. If anyone complained, I would just say, "then you don't need to live in the country, move to the city."

My turkeys are a lot more annoying and what I am thinking of getting rid of -- three of my turkeys ( two Toms and a hen) relentlessly follow & crowd around me and are so loud I can't think or hear anything else -- it makes me crazy. I'd like to know what to do about them!

What auction is that?
