So my mom just brought this egg in. First picture is how we found it. Second is what popped out when I pulled on the umbilical cord looking thing. What in the heck is this? It's pretty firm. Broke open the egg after and it looked pretty normal.

Did you cut open that little 'blob?
If you still have it, do so.
I suspect it is a 'lash', which is a wad of pus indicating an infection.
Or it could be a rather large piece of tissue from inside the reproductive tract.

Good pics btw.

No, I didn't but it's pretty firm and doesn't feel full of liquid at all.

Thanks!!

I'll keep looking into that but everything I've read so far was either much bigger or laying off by itself. This was in a perfectly normal egg shell and was about the size of a dime/nickel.

Looks like a piece of tissue inside, but the outer 'coating' looks lash-like.

A lot of glitches can happen in the old egg factory, hopefully you'll never see it again.
But if you do see another, might want to pinpoint which bird has laid it and keep a good eye on her for other symptoms of illness.

How old are your birds...and what breed??

They are a couple of different ages. Half are about 1-2 and the others are 2.5 and up. EE, buff and lavender orpingtons with a couple of mixes in there also. There is only 9 (8 hens) in that group and everyone seems fine. We have a buff that came to us with a bare bottom and we've been working on that but she's been laying perfect eggs. I'm guessing it might have been her though.
