So hatch day to tomorrow, but we had our first little bugger hatch out today. It’s been 5 hours and the umbilical cord is still attached to the egg and the chick. The poor chick is just dragging the big shell around. Its now like a dried string, but won’t break.
since other eggs are pipping I don’t want to open the incubator, but I’m worried about this little guy.
The chick is busy and not looking ill.
What do I do? Will it be ok?
Thank you

My first ever hatch I’m going through now the first chick had this. It eventually comes off. If you want I suppose you could force the matter and remove it. I did remove some residue with a wet paper towel or toilet paper.
But it’s probably fine to leave as is. Just got a little tow behind trailer. LOL

It will probably come off on its own. I think if your humidity is high enough and the chicks aren’t zipping yet you could quickly reach in and grab this guy and cut the shell into a smaller piece. That way you’d leave it attached and not mess with the cord itself but the egg shell wouldn’t be so large for him to drag around.
