Hello folks.
Im just starting out with my first girls. Thankfully I found my way to BYC. I have been pouring over the site for the last couple days and it has been remarkably helpful. I have personally wanted to get some hens for years but it took some time to get the missus on board, but now that she is we are jumping in with both feet. I'm sure I will be bombarding you all with plenty of newbie questions in the next few weeks.
We started our little flock out with 8 sexed chicks from a local feed store, 4 Americaunas and 4 *something* browns (shoulda paid closer attention to the sign...but I was excited) and they are between 2 and 3 weeks old at this point. Currently I am keeping them in a dog crate in my dining room. They seem to be socializing well with my 6-year old daughter, who spends alot of time sitting in the crate holding them and singing to them....its really cute. The girls are getting their feathers, the Americaunas are a bit older than the browns so they are a bit further along....actually, they kinda look like a preschooler with a glue stick is putting their feathers on em. Even all raggedy looking they are still adorable.
One of my girls has a crooked beak which I hope doesn't cause her any ill effects, she is the raggediest looking one in the bunch and of course, my favorite, I named her Mabel. My daughters laid claim to the others...though I still claim the flock as "my girls".
Thanks for having such a wonderful and informative site. I'll be here plenty! Time to get started on that coop...
