CA, always with my chickens!
Recently, about a week ago, I gave my chicken away. Sadly we are moving to a place where we cannot support chickens or even have them. But, being me, I cannot bear thinking that I will not have chickens ever again. So of course, I made a plan for the future when we have more land for chickens.

But, the first problem was where to get the chickens in the first place. I researched and decided on my choice of RIRs, Silver Laced Wyandottes, Speckled Sussexs, and Black-Sex Links for my first batch (oh no, I would have to get more later

). I was looking at hatcheries (CackleHatchery, MeyerHatchery, McMurryHatchery), and they seemed pretty promising and had good reviews. But then I started seeing around BYC that you shouldn't get them from hatcheries and rather get your desired chickens from breeders. And I'm not very sure on the whole... breeder situation. Can you guys tell me about it? I want to make sure I will make the right decision of where I'm getting my chickens from. Th

Hatchery birds are bred to be good layers so if you want good pets and egg layers then there's nothing wrong with them, but birds from a breeder are purebred, standardized, and can be more pretty. Though in my experience, show quality/breeder bird don't seem quite as friendly as feedstore birds. Good luck to you! :D

Thank you for your response. I will have a hard time choosing. I would like to have purebred chickens, but I would also want them to be friendly, too ( they probably are). I don't know if my family is willing to put in the effort of trying to find good chickens. I'm kinda the only one thats cares, but I will make it happen some day.
Do you know where to find local breeders?

Local breeders can be found on Craigslist (but its up to you to then trust craigslist XD) and can have contacts with poultry Shows/Fairs, you could ask local 4H poultry groups, you can ask people at a feedstore though they might now know much ^^
