First, in addition to the hot lemonade, my mom had a great recipe: Just add honey so that you are making a sweet, hot lemonade. The honey soothes and disinfects, and the lemon disinfects. The heat gets the mucus running. Make it super hot, and use real lemon!
It sounds like you are underage, but if you're not, put the above mixture in a tablespoon and add some whiskey. Take it before bedtime if you have a cough. You get the above benefits, but you also get the cough reflex calmed down. It's a hot toddy! And when you think about it, it's no different from taking an over-the-counter cough syrup. Those are just alcohol and sugar too, but less effective forms. Be careful not to overdo it, because being drunk will lower your immune system's effectiveness instead of boosting it. You're just going for a calming of the cough here, not a full-blown knock-out.
Second, and far more effective than the lemonade remedy for clearing mucus, is hot and spicy foods. Even if you don't like them, nothing will be better for you. Go to a Thai restaurant and order anything they have, and ask for medium or hot, depending on what you can stand. My favorites for colds are Tom Kha, yellow curry, and Pad Thai of course! Even if you don't like Thai food, this will get the stuff flowing out of your system. Get it as hot as you can stand. Even if you have to go overboard, your body will thank you!
Third, chop onions!
Fourth, take a super hot shower or hang your head over a pot of boiling water. Get in a sauna if you can.
Fifth, Gargle with listerine often to kill the germs. And wash your hands as often as possible.
Sixth, but probably better for first, get some sleep and drink lots of hot fluids, no matter what they are.
Seventh, take a jog. Nothing like a little exercise to get the fluids flowing.
Last, and I've never tried this, but the Indians have a device called a neti pot that makes it easy to irrigate your nasal passages with warm salt-water. I hear it works wonders but I haven't bought one yet.
Hope you feel better soon! I'm currently sick too, so I'm right there with ya.
i used my little girls plastic tea pot she had with her kitchen toys....ha ha...same concept for the neti pot. WORKS TOO. and yes...i cleaned it and disinfected it when i was done...it's not like i got goobs in it. no...those go down the drain.
Garlic. Crush it and let it sit in the air for 7-15 minutes, then ingest it any way you can get it down. Very good antibiotic/antimicrobial. Then honey taken straight by spoon the day you need to sing will help the throat and my D-step-D swears by it when she sings. Also, I hear good things about Oil of wild Oregano, just a few drops under the tongue. I've never tried it, so can't speak from experience, but many people say it really helps with colds/flu/congestion.

That reminds me of a horrible experience I had the one and only time I ever used Dr. Bronner's soap in the shower and it got where it shouldn't...worst experience ever! Not to hijack the post or anything. I stand by my recommendation of thai food. I had some for dinner but it should have been about 4x as hot as it was for it to work. It was our first attempt at cooking it at home though, so we didn't want to overdo it.
Cayenne Fruit Extract. Sold in capsules at any Wal-Mart . It's just Cayenne Pepper ground up. It will thin out any mucus in your body. Work within minutes, just don't burp after taking them. They're around $3 for 60 capsules. Neat stuff!

Strange, the instructions on the bottle say to put 2 drops under the tongue or mix with juice. Live & learn, though...certainly can't hurt to put in the juice!
