ummy ummy treats for chickens!

When you give treats to your babies remember they are not human they do not like what we like. Yes they will eat anything, that is called survival. What they NEED is pure foods, veggies eggs shells ground up, I feed bean sprouts and the love them, mine like oranges but I only give them a little, peanuts, seeds of all kinds.

There are preservatives in our food and given in large amounts can kill remember they are a lot smaller than us and cannot handle so much of the JUNK we all like to feed them.

Our girls get just about everything we eat. Yesterday I cooked a couple of potatoes with an apple then put yogurt on top. We try to give them warm stuff now when it oh so cold. I also leave the warm water right in with whatever I cooked for them.

Things we tend to feed:

Veggies: many, many kinds. We do not feed advocado or onions.

Fruit: We give them fruit on a regular basis, we have not notice a change in their laying.

Oatmeal, rice, peanuts, eggs and egg shells, garlic.

On occassion they have even gotten chicken, pork and salmon but there tends to be a disagreement in our household about whether or not that is morally right.

Now that it is winter, we try to find slightly damaged food items on clearance to add to their diet since there is nothing for them to eat in their run or free ranging. They actually have not really come out of their copp since it got cold and they especially do not like the snow. We have alos had a significant amount of ice this year which they, rightfully so, hide from. So, we want them to get some leafy greens and have something to do inside the coop.

frozen peas, and frozen corn -- thawed obviously

Any ends of bags that get freezerburned get zapped in the microwave and then go out to the chickens, who LOVE them.

I would be careful offering more than just a little bit of treats to a recuperating chicken, though -- you do not want to cause digestive upset (from too much of unaccustomed or unbnalanced foods) on top of the chicken's other problems. Good luck,

Pat

The chickens are awesome tho, so they deserve it!

Chicken Treats? My flock loves days old bread(cheap at bread store), chopped collards & turnip greens, strawberry tops, tomatoes, cucumbers peels, pumpkins busted up pieces and you'll get back a paper thin shell, watermellon, now thats funny to watch! Basically, they like most everything we do, just about. All you can do is try stuff, as they will snub it like what has already been said if they don't like it. I know the man down the road-a-ways feeds his the remains of fish after he fillets them.
They absolutely go crazy for treats!

I believe that milk is a no-no, chickens are lactose intolerant forget why exactly, cheese & yogurt anything that has a "live" culture is ok....someone smart (thinking of a unicorn) can tell the how's & why's of it.....

Mine eat about anything I eat. No sweets or junk food, of course.
We had some shrimp left over from a superbowl party. I thought, naw they won't eat that, but I'm cheap and hate to waste food. I threw a few into my pen of normally very calm, gentle Orp's. You woulda thought that they hadn't eaten in a month. They were squawking and fighting for the shrimp. I immediately put the rest in and they each had a couple shimp. They were happy. The next day every hen laid an egg. I think to say thanks for the shrimp

I have given them chicken soup that was left over, but that doesn't seem right somehow.
