Unbelievable....all PULLETS!! ***please read**

wow, i had no idea it was the hens that determine the sex!!! I'm going to start paying more attention to mine now... see who's giving me more females!

To answer some of your questions:

There are 6 of the original buff hens.......they are all laying eggs, but for some reason, there is one that lays a "darker" and "larger" egg than the rest. That is the only egg he has hatched out. Now, funny thing is......we don't know WHICH of the 6 is laying that "dark larger" egg. They are just the only eggs he's putting in the incubator. The 6 hens are probably 2-3y old, I'm guessing. We got them from an auction about the time they started laying.

Gypsy07: As far as the offspring.....we were wondering that also!!!! Wouldn't that be the MOST awesome thing yet???

Denninmi: The oldest hens are probably 4months old, while the youngest are weeks old. My fiance would just put the egg in the incubator anytime he would find "that certain egg" in the coop. We wondered the same thing, that maybe they weren't showing characteristics yet.....but we have watched them grow, and they are DEFINITELY hens! We even had our buddy from the bird farm come over and look just to make sure, and he says they are all hens. Now, out of the 1st say 100 we hatched, they are all at least 2 months old. Their combs are all very small, nothing prominant at all. And the shapes of their feathers are round, not pointed like on a roo. We don't call ourselves chicken experts, but we have been raising chickens for about 2y now, and I think we do pretty well with the sexing. The young ones (wks old) of course we can't sex yet, but I was just talking about the 1st 100 eggs we hatched out. So far, even the week old ones look like hens

I researched some about what would make there be more females opposed to males. This months BACKYARD POULTRY magazine (june/july) had an interesting article about it. The article is entitled: "Determining the Sex In Chicks". The article says eggs shape or size has nothing to do with sex. It also says the temperature of the incubator has nothing to do with the sex (my fiance was arguing with me the temp was why we were getting all hens). It does say some hens do lay a higher percentage of one sex.

All in all, its the craziest thing EVER!! But we couldn't be more happier than to be on the receiving end! We are up to about 150 of the buffs now, and still no sign of a roo. I will definitly keep everyone updated, as it's just as exciting to us.

The roo we have is really mean and tries to fight my fiance every time he enters the coop. But, even though the male has nothing to do with determining the sex, we are still wondering if we get rid of him, will our luck run out??.........so for now, hes a keeper.

Now, let me go see if I can get some pictures for you guys....

That's unbelievable. You could start you're on hatchery!! Or at least ship the special eggs! I've never heard of getting that many pullets in such a drawn out hatch. I usually get at least one rooster in every 4 eggs hatched. SO COOL!!!
