I have been thinking on and off about doing something really different, right now just playing with the idea.
But I am curious, what are some of the most unconventional housing ideas you have come across.
The ones I like are: a lighthouse, a church, a hobbit hole (there really ARE instructions online for that, lol.)

An xBF of mine lived in a hobbit hole. Literally, if you approaced the house from the back all you saw was a green grassy hill. Then when you drove around and down the front you could see the front of the house. They had a round door custom built and installed not long ago.

Edited to add: I saw on the news that an old couple bought an old roadside public bathroom and converted it into their dreamhouse. Its just off a highway but has an AMAZING view of the ocean!

I have seen pictures of those "hobbit holes". Very interesting. I love the round doors! Did it have round windows as well?

I wanted to live in a travel trailer and just go wherever, whenever I wanted. Then I married a man with a house and 2 kids....end of dream

We have discussed finding a cave with a large mouth to it, and building our livingroom around it, and the rest of the house around the livingroom

I saw a house hunters show once and these people were looking to buy this awesome house built into the side of a mountain/cave.. totaly cool.

Examples.... (yes I just had to google it)

Saw that in Ft Worth they tried selling the idea of Railroad Cargo/Shipping Containers...

There are ones that use multiple containers like http://isbu2you.files.wordpress.com/2009/05/container-city.jpg

Then
there are plans for a single container home like http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/uimages/ny/9-25-08shipping3.jpg

One
site, this is all they do... http://www.conhouse.com/

Yep TOTALLY cool...stays around 65 degrees inside the house year round WITHOUT CH&A!!!! That is the draw for us to live in a cave...perfect temps, without the bill

It'd be a huge positive step toward self sufficiency.
