Well I am new to actually raising chickens, but have been reading up on it for about a year now, Thanks to my wife and 20 year old daughter. They picked up 3, not sure why 3, Rhode Island Reds. I "sexed" them to be females. I read, this somewhere, that you could check the wings so we will see if I actually did remember it correctly! So I now have something to do in my semi-retired stage besides reading. Looks like I am going to be working this week building a coop and a run and keeping the chicks away from the cats and dogs, which are now sitting in a brooder aka storage tote in the middle of our living room!

So how much different are RIR then Australorps? More reading!

So any other advice other then getting rid of my wife and daughter? Just kidding about getting ride of my wife she is too good of a cook for me to do that!!

Thanks from a new keeper,
Robert

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Good luck with the new chicks!

Hi and welcome! Don't get rid of the wife and daughter, otherwise who will buy you more chickens? I have a wife and 3 daughters and 2 grand kids who can't go by a TSC this time of year without bringing home something else.

Thanks everyone,

my wife did say that I was lucky that the goats couldn't fit in the bag or we would have had goats too! Oh thank God for that one!! We have 5 children and 7 grandchildren, of which only 1 has seen the chicks. I have a feeling we will like this chicken adventure. I have decided that this first coop will also double as a hospital after the real one gets built, starting off small. good thing I am handy!
