Under what circumstances can I open the bator while hatching?

Buster

I open my hovabator 1588 during hatching to do various things, with no problems. THe humidity and temp stay pretty constant, or get back up very quickly after closing it. I wouldn't keep it open long, but getting chicks in and out or esp, dealing with an emergency like a sick or dead chick is fine.

I am hoping you have many many more babies come out!

Thanks! 4 chicks now (excluding the dead one) and 2 more pips! I'm going to cut a couple loads of fire wood and come back and check. I left for a couple of hours this morning and when I came back I had gone from 1 chick to 4!

Well, the pip is the first little hole that the chick makes in the shell. Then they start zipping (they keep pipping in a line continuously around the shell as if they are unzipping it!) It's cute, cause then they push it open like they are climbing out of a submarine. (especially if you are using the egg carton method of hatching!)

Thanks...that is cute! My chicks are on day 10...I'm so excited the time is going by sooooo slow!

Do they really peep back at you when you peep first?
