Hi all! Just wanted to ask people’s opinions on our male Goose? It’s almost like the underside of his beak has collapsed but isn’t affecting him at all and doesn’t look sore. Has anyone seen this before?

Have you looked inside the mouth? @casportpony is this normal?
@ChloeBro, welcome to BYC, sorry your goose has this problem. Can you catch him and inspect the inside of his mouth? I have not seen this before, but I think it might be a sublingual impaction.

Thank you for your help! I will have a good look inside his mouth see what I can find!

Good luck, let us know what you find.
So I’ve just had a look in his mouth, it’s completely clear and his tongue has like fallen into the gap. Nothing underneath it. So I guess I will just monitor him from now on. Thank you for your help

Hi, Chloebro, Do you have any update on your goose? Is he ok? I'm monitoring a domestic goose that has escaped in to the wild here in Scotland and it has a similar thing to your goose's lump. I can't find much else about it online. Be good to know how yours is. I'm thinking of calling animal rescue to this one but the lump doesn't seem to be causing it any distress at all.

Thanks, Sinéad

Sublingual impactions should be dealt with, as they often don't come out themselves, but continue to grow in size, which can get to the point where the bird is unable to properly swallow foods and starve to death. Bacteria may also start to cultivate inside the mouth.

It would be best to call an animal rescue in your area and notify them of the bird, so an attempt can be made to take the ball out of the chin.
