Understanding New members

I think it's horrible to EVER answer someone that they should just search, because by the time you've typed that, you could've answered them- FURTHERMORE, someone else might be looking at the thread because they have the same question, and now two+ people are left looking at their shoes, feeling dejected.

Please feel free to ask ME. I will answer you.

I agree it is hard to read and get the correct context over the internet, but sometimes even reading it cheerfully doesn't work. BUT I will ask anyway and look specifically for the people here who have been helpful. So far, everyone has been very helpful with my questions that I know have been asked 100's of times before.

Trooper I completely agree with you. I have only been in the chicken world a short time and my brother shared this web forum with me. I was so excited thinking I should have all the answers at my fingertips. But every time I post I get like 50 views and 2 responses. It's very frustrating!! Sorry I can't help you with your pics though!!

Yes the search feature comes up with hundreds of possibilites, and it can be an endless chore to find the right thread. I try to put the address of a helpful thread right in the response, there are some great threads with information that the people answering you might not be aware of.

I am another one very willing to assist newcomers with anything *I* can, but I am NOT an expert.

...I don't think I've ever suggested somebody use the search function... I use it to find posts I recall so i can quote information accurately, but it's true: if you have time to type out "try searching" then you have time to answer the question. With that said, sometimes I hit posts I haven't a clue how to answer, so I am guilty of being a viewer without replying.

Anything to do with many specific breeds, breeding, etc., or lots of emergency treatments, I don't have the skill to answer.

I still think BYC is THE most helpful forum for chicken keeping folks, new or tenured!

I know how you feel when I was new. But I found this page on the BYC , forum feedback and annoucments thread. https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?pid=1198

It
has some of those "How to's" for pics etc that a new person really needs to get started. I have almost never ran in to someone who got a little antsy with me about asking a repetitive question.
If you do, kill them with kindness and drive on. Someone usually jumps in there and reminds them to lighten up a little. No sense in alienating a new comer and they quit the site. I love to see this site grow!

I no that when I first got on here there was alot to learn.I had questions and didn't exactly no where to go and get the answers.Believe it or not I still from time to time find things on BYC that I didn't no I could do.While some no alot of different things there are some that are trying to get to no the site. With this new system that is coming out in a few days alot of people will have questions.Old members and new members alike. As we learn the new changes I hope that we remember what it was like a few years down the road when someone new asks a reppetative question.I also feel that the staff that take care of us with this site are aware of the confusion from time to time that all of us have.I thank all that are on here for their help:ya:weee
