Undetected Injury-FALSE ALARM-POOP

Oh no. I was just sitting in the pen with the girls, waiting for the sun to hit the yard before (supervised) free range time. Ruby, my Buckeye, whose nickname is “Adventure Girl,” because she is very curious and is often off doing her own thing, had a chunk of something in her feathers on her back end, which I discovered giving her a little rub while she squatted. I don’t think it was there yesterday, but cannot be totally sure, since her behavior is completely normal, and she is still laying. I *just* discovered this. Came inside to prep some things and will keep you posted. I don’t know the extent of it yet, but I’m pretty sure there’s an injury. Will investigate, take a pic if I can, and report back. Not sure yet if it’s something that should be soaked, washed, sprayed, etc., but here’s my arsenal:

Yes.....mine get "chinks" by standing under roosts. Frozen ones are even better

Well, that was a good “drill.” The arsenal includes supportive care. I noticed I don’t have sterile pads nor sterile saline. What’s the best sterile saline to have on hand for flushing wounds? Sterile eye wash for humans?

You can use sterile eye wash.

If you have time, when the need arises, you can make your own too - boil some water, add salt, let cool and place in a sterile jar. Make a fresh batch everyday. There's quite a few instructions if you google it.

fwiw - you have the Vetericyn eye wash this is very good. You also have betadine and chorhexidine, those would also be suitable to rinse/flush wounds as well.

Thank you! A Buckeye wasn’t even on my radar. I was stuck in the “pretty feathers and good personality” mode, and of course all the most popular breeds came up. The lady at the feed store told me about Buckeyes when I was ordering my chicks. I did my own research and decided she was worth a shot. I’m so happy to have her!
