Undeveloped Comb/Waddles

Hope you all don't mind me jumping in here?

I just wanted to let you now that my two BO girls have very small single combs also, and of those two, one is a fantastic layer (5-6 eggs per week).

The other, (bless her,) tries to lay an egg 6 days a week, but is currently having some issues with soft shelled eggs. She did lay normally for a few months first though.

They were both amongst my first layers at 22-23 weeks old, so I doubt that your girl, at 23 weeks, is far off laying

Thanks for that, Krista! Everything about this sweetie of mine says she's destined for greatness and I appreciate knowing her comb challenged character will not stand in her way.

I'm sorry, but that is definitely a rooster. The long, narrow, pointed saddle (back) feathers, beginnings of pointed tail feathers, and large red comb are classic signs.

Mine would be a guess, Amber. Those tail feathers would cause me concern but you need a better opinion than mine.

Amber, It appears your 'girl' is indeed to be named Donald.

All of those pictures (and I'm not sure if they are of the same bird or not) are boys.

Granted, I'm still fairly new at chicken owning, but all the pics you put up show pointed saddle feathers.

I think you have cockerels there, not hens.

Lol Krista! They are all the same bird.... I'm super sad, but I had a feeling about it... He still loves to get on my lap and pulls all the others off by their tail feathers. He isn't even attempting to crow yet, but the RIR is crowing up a storm... Not to mention he is pouncing on my girls trying to get his grove on! I didn't know chicken sex was so violent!:/

Well, if it's any consolation, I have a BO cockerel and he is an absolute delight.

He has never been aggressive towards people, and looks after his girls really well.

If you are going to keep a rooster, I would recommend keeping him

The Chicken Love thing is pretty full on - your boy is normal in that department.

They do start to be a little more considerate as they get older though. Yes, they will still jump on top of your girls, but they will do a nice little dance for her first, instead of springing a surprise attack from behind a tree, or waiting until they bend over to eat!
