How in the WORLD do I get my boxer dog to STOP eating the chicken poop???
sickbyc.gif

The girls free range most of the day in our backyard, but when I let our dogs out to potty or play my boxer heads around the yard like its an easter egg hunt and eats the bird poop..

I want to add this dog eats EVERYTHING. Shes on an expensive kibble for allergy reasons. She use to eat her own poop as a puppy, but we got the drops you put in her food to make her poop nasty(er) and that stopped it! Im thinking maybe the corn in the chick feed makes the poop taste good..

My husband said their is no way to stop her, but Im hoping some of you fine people can give me advice to prove him wrong

.. Im afraid shes going to get really sick or worse...

Coming from a very boxer filled family... you can not stop them from eating the poo. The only prevention is no longer allowing free ranging, that goes for either the birds or your dog. One of my boxers has dietary restricions and gets severe diarrhea after eating poo, and the other remains normal. Don't stress, just figure out what works for you.

Just saw what you are a vet tech, I'm an ER vet tech

Ok, I'm not laughing at you, I'm laughing because I swear, I could have written this post myself!! Our Boxer LOVES chicken Poo! Same situation as you, free-ranging and like a snuffleluggalus, he munches right behind the girls...

I will stay with this thread and read the posts as they come.

Been there & STILL there,

AWESOME - new boxer snacks in town - chicken ****... UGH And see our other dog (terrier) just looks at her like "Im not touching that"..

It's not just boxers, it's dogs, period.
I asked my vet one time why dogs eat poo and he said, "Because they're dogs". Guess that about sums it up.

Our boxer did the same thing with duck and cat poo. Gross.

She was also on a special diet. It ended up being lack of protein and a few minerals. I switched her to grain-free foods and have added cooked eggs to her diet and she is no longer interested. It didn't work immediately though. It took about two weeks. Also--since going grain-free for her, she no longer takes Prednisone and no more hot spots! Actually, she doesn't have any of her allergy symptoms and the grain-free is cheaper than the low-allergy prescription food (which she still had some slight symptoms with).

Hope this info helps!

My dog seems to prefer CHICK poo, over adult chicken poo--apparently she's eaten enough of it to have a discriminating pallet. (She's also mostly Jack Russell)
It's funny though, sometimes my dog owning friends comment that the chickens are gross--I've seen lots of dogs eating chicken poo, but I've yet to see my chickens eat the dog poo.
