They say, "Avoid giving advice in a crowd."
This is one time where I would disagree. Good advice, that.

Not so in Virginia - when the insurance gets canceled, the company sends a letter to DMV (either USPS or electronically), who then sends a letter to you requiring you to PROVE you had insurance with someone during the "lapse," after the original policy was canceled. Not sure why all other states don't do it that way...

well woudnt they have to prove you where driving at that time..car could be in the garage and your getting rides with a friend...

The op is from NH. In NH insurance is not required.
But atleast the other driver(possibly both) is now required to have a sr-22. SR-22 isn't a type of insurance, but rather proof that you have certain types of insurance (based upon the financial responsbility laws of your state).
Simply, it is a form which must be filed by the insurance company to the state (Department of Motor Vehicles) stating that auto liability insurance is in effect for a particular individual
A basic liability insurance may have been cheaper........

"The SR-22 is a form that confirms you are complying with the New Hampshire Division of Motor Vehicle (DMV) financial responsibility laws. It is usually required when you have had anaccident but had no liability coverage, or as a resultof a serious violation. If you have insurance, your insurance company must file the form with the DMV. If the policy is ever cancelled or non-renewed, the company mustnotify the DMV. The DMV may suspend or revoke your driver’s license for failure to have or maintain the financial responsibility requirements. For more information about SR-22 requirements contact the DMV at 603-271-3101.23. "

Doesn't matter. In Virginia, if the car is tagged, it HAS to have insurance - period...

You can bet your sweet bippy if you hit ME without insurance I'll sue you so fast and hard your great grandkids will be giving me their milk money until they are 26.

There is absolutely 100% no excuse for driving a car without liability insurance.
