Unintelligent Orpingtons

So, out of the 5 breeds I own, my two buff orpingtons are by far the dumbest chickens of the bunch lol! They usually circle the coop looking for the door after they free range, even though the doors are wide open lol! Is it just my chickens, or are orpingtons usually very ditsy?

LOL!! I have a Lav. Orp. Roo and he is the most dense chicken I've ever had. I just finished a larger pen for my chickens and he can't seem to figure out how to get out of the small trampoline run into the 22' by 40' run even when I leave a trail of food for him!! My girls (5 EE's) are out and having a ball by the time that I get home in the morning but he is crowing at them from the smaller run because if he can't get out then they shouldn't either.

I have 3 Buff Orpingtons. 2 are very smart and intelligent bt the daughter of one of them is called Bella, and she is dumb! She had a dust bath in a bog...

LOL That is too funny! I've never seen one do a mud bath before!

That is very funny! For me atleast, they may be stupid, but they lay great eggs! I wish they'd be a little bit smarter, but what they lack in intenlligence, they make up for with egg production. :) Thanks for sharing.

^^^^ That is hysterical!!! -love those pics!

My two Buff Orpingtons definitely take top honors for being less than bright. They will be two years old in a few months, and to this day cannot figure out how to exit the run without help at times. -when the run door is opened, the flock runs out sans those two gals. They pace back in forth in the run attempting to locate the door. It is hilarious!!

A few days ago, whilst they were out foraging, one of 'em decided to go to the coop to lay. She went into the bantam's part of the coop and tried to get into the little bantam nest box. (She is huge!) I finally had to go in the coop and literally place her in her nest box.

-no way that big gal was ever going to fit in that little bantam box.

That's very funny! Well, it seems like I'm not the only one with less than genius chickens lol! Thanks for sharing.

I think orpingtons are a very good bird to have in a flock, but they do manage to find their way to the bottom of the pecking order rather quickly. Of all the orpingtons I have, I can say that two in my current flock are actually quite intelligent. It is almost as if they are only orpingtons by looks. The rest, however, are pretty hopeless. They're all extremely sweet though, which is why they will always be included in my flock.

Good to hear. I hope I didn't come across as hating on the breed, because that's not what I meant at all. They're excellent egg producers, I hear they're very tasty as a meat bird, and mine are very sweet. That's really neat that your 2 orpingtons are intelligent! That's very surprising lol! :)

I don't agree with that, my two girls dethroned the top hen on their first day!
