Hello!

A few days a go my dad called me and said he was getting some chickens for free from craigslist. He asked if we wanted to keep some of them. What he really meant was "Would you like ALL of them". After spending a weekend building up a nice chicken coop and penned in scratch yard, we're now the proud parents of 27 chickens and a duck that thinks he's a chicken.

We're very green; we don't know what breeds we have, we're not even sure how many roosters we have. The previous owner said they were 18 months old and he was getting about a dozen eggs a day. After 2 weeks, we're getting about 5-6 eggs a day. We've started free ranging them in our backyard of 5 acres (they were in a pen before), and that seems to make them happy.

We already love them, they're part of our family. When we go outside they all come running to us like puppies. We're here to learn because starting off with 28 birds and very little experience, I'm sure you can imagine we have questions.

Happy to be here.

Wow, you only got thrown in at the deep end! Have a look round the site, the Learning Centre is packed with info, under Frequently Asked Questions we have links to informative threads and the sticky threads are very informative as well. If you post nice, clear pics of your chickens under the What Breed Or Gender is This? section we can tell you what breeds you have and how many roos/hens.
Have fun and hope you get lots of eggs!

. You're going to want to be very careful about having a Drake around hens. If he breeds them they can be seriously hurt or killed.

Welcome to BYC!!! We are glad to have ya with us on the rollercoaster of chicken ownership. If you want post a pic of a few of them and we would be more then happy to help out.
